The People We Defend

A Living Cultural Heritage Under Siege

Western Syria is home to one of humanity's earliest alphabets—a civilization that helped write the very concept of written language. But this legacy isn't locked in museums. It lives in the farmers, teachers, engineers, and mothers who carry forward millennia of pluralism, tolerance, and intellectual openness.

They believe in freedom—the freedom to practice their faith without compulsion, and the freedom of others to follow their own beliefs. They do not force their religion on anyone, nor do they seek to impose their way of life.

Women are educated, lead, and work—raising the next generation with the same values of openness and humanity. In Western Syria, a girl with a book is as powerful a symbol as any ancient inscription.

They are farmers, teachers, doctors, engineers—citizens who wish to live in peace, to raise their children, to contribute to their communities. They ask only for what every human being deserves: the right to exist, the right to practice their faith, the right to learn, and the right to live without fear.

Today, radical authorities have declared this pluralistic identity a crime punishable by death. Entire villages are being emptied. Families are being hunted. A way of life that predates modern borders is being systematically dismantled.

At first, we thought they were just searching for weapons, so we stayed indoors and locked our doors. We had nothing to fear—we had never carried weapons, and we didn't have any in our homes. We told ourselves there was no reason to be afraid. Then we heard takbeers (Allahu Akbar) echoing through the streets, followed by the sound of Quranic recitation blaring from loudspeakers. We were confused—why would this be happening? Then, the screams of women and children started rising from every direction. That's when we realized a massacre was approaching.

According to many testimonies collected by OHCHR, perpetrators raided houses, asking residents whether they were Alawite or Sunni before proceeding to either kill or spare them accordingly. Some survivors told the Office that many men were shot dead in front of their families.
