The Western Syria Alliance (WSA) strongly condemns the violent attack targeting the Christian town of Al-Suqaylabiyah in the Hama countryside on March 27, 2026.
This incident is not isolated. It is part of a broader pattern of organized, systematic, and ongoing violence against indigenous and religious minority communities in Syria, carried out under the protection and cover of the de facto jihadist authority and its affiliated security structures.
The deliberate targeting of religious symbols, including the destruction of the statue of the Virgin Mary, alongside indiscriminate gunfire, looting, and acts of intimidation against civilians, reflects a deeply concerning escalation aimed at terrorizing communities and eroding their presence in their ancestral lands.
WSA affirms that:
• Targeting civilians based on their religious identity constitutes a grave violation of international human rights and humanitarian law.
• The failure to hold perpetrators accountable enables continued abuses and fuels instability.
• The current environment of impunity, under the de facto authorities, is contributing directly to these violations.
We call on:
• The international community, including the United Nations and relevant human rights bodies, to urgently investigate these incidents.
• Governments and policymakers to condition any engagement with the de facto authorities on clear, enforceable human rights protections.
• Immediate measures to ensure the protection and safety of vulnerable communities, including Christians, Alawites, Druze, and other minorities across Syria.
The Western Syria Alliance reiterates that identity is not a crime, and that the protection of vulnerable populations is not optional — it is a legal and moral obligation under international law.
We will continue to document, raise awareness, and advocate for accountability until justice is achieved.
